The Lens
8 x the first number on a binocular refers to its magnification strength (8x) and how many times the lenses can magnify. The second figure (x42) refers to the width of the lenses in millimetres. Generally the larger the lens the more you can see, but remember the downside is a higher price.

I suggest you always shop around and check out what is available before you buy a pair of binoculars.
